Controversial Nigerian artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has called out his industry peers and the organisers of the 2025 Headies Awards after being overlooked in this year’s nominations.
In a video that has since gone viral, Portable alleged that many artists gain recognition by purchasing awards rather than earning them.
He criticised the Headies for what he described as a lack of credibility, claiming that awards are being “sold” and not based on merit.
According to the singer, he has no interest in buying awards, insisting that he would rather invest his money in meaningful ventures. Taking pride in his recent international collaboration with British rapper Skepta, Portable argued that global partnerships are a more genuine form of recognition than local accolades.
“Skepta and Portable, we are the owners of the award, but they said they won’t give us,” he claimed.
He also dismissed the perception that award winners are more accomplished than him, saying his wealth and success speak for themselves.
“You’re not successful, you only bought award. They mock me that I wasn’t given the award, but I have money. I use it to buy my cars. I’m successful. I’ve dropped an album. Are you more successful than I am? Who listens to your music?” he said.
Portable concluded by reiterating his focus on lasting investments: “I would use my money to buy land, buy houses, I cannot buy fake life.”
