Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has opened up about her decision to stop attending church, citing personal experiences that led her to focus on a more private and personal relationship with God.

In a candid revelation, the actress explained that while she remains a Christian and was once very active in church activities, repeated uncomfortable encounters with pastors in multiple congregations pushed her away from formal worship settings.

“I am not an atheist. I’m a Christian, and I used to be very active in church, but over time I realised that going to church alone doesn’t make you God’s favourite. It’s what you do behind closed doors that really matters.”

Martins disclosed that in every church she joined, pastors began to make advances toward her—an experience that deeply affected her spiritual journey and prompted her to seek a more personal path in her faith.

“Unfortunately, in every church I attended, the pastors started making advances at me. So, I stopped. I built a personal relationship with God and made a promise to stay faithful to Him by doing things that please Him. Since then, every time I go down on my knees, He answers.”

Now, the actress says she channels her faith through acts of charity and private worship, which she believes have brought her divine favour and answered prayers.

“So yes, the pastoral advances pushed me away, but I now worship God in my own way—through charity and personal devotion.”

Martins’ remarks have sparked conversations about personal faith, organized religion, and the challenges some individuals face within religious communities.
