Hollywood actress and humanitarian, Angelina Jolie, has said she no longer recognises the United States, expressing alarm over what she views as a growing erosion of free speech and civil liberties in her home country.

Speaking on Sunday at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, where she was presenting her latest film, Jolie reflected on the state of the nation she once proudly called home.

“I love my country, but I don’t at this time recognise my country,” she stated, when asked if she feared for freedom of expression in the U.S.

Her remarks come at a time when concerns about the suppression of critical voices have intensified. Recent incidents, including the suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over remarks about the killing of conservative figure Charlie Kirk, have fueled debates about the boundaries of public discourse and political influence on media.

Jolie acknowledged the emotional weight of speaking out in such an environment, particularly for women. “I wish she was able to speak more as openly as I have been, and have people respond as graciously as you have, and not feel as alone,” she said, referring to the isolation that can come with voicing dissent.

She also touched on women’s health, sharing a personal reflection on how gender-specific illnesses shape self-perception. “There’s something very particular to women’s cancers, because obviously it affects us, you know, how we feel as women,” she added.

Jolie’s comments underscore a broader unease among public figures about the direction of civil liberties in the U.S., adding her voice to a growing chorus questioning the country’s commitment to its foundational ideals.
