Veteran Nollywood actress and preacher, Thelma Chukwunwem, has made a bold declaration about her decades-long journey in Nigeria’s film industry — no producer or director has ever slept with her.
In a recent interview, Chukwunwem, who began acting at the age of 20, revealed how she faced intense pressure and sexual advances early in her career but never gave in.
“Were there temptations? Yes,”she said. “But I stood my ground. I told one director who made advances after an audition that if he thought I must get down with him before getting a role, he should keep his script.”
Now celebrating 31 years in the industry, Thelma says she has no regrets. She credits her unwavering principles to a strong upbringing and deep-rooted faith.
“Maybe it was because of the way I was raised, the mindset I had, and the schools I attended,” she said. “This is my 31st year in Nollywood. I have never had anything to do with a director or producer.”
One particular moment stood out in her story — a director once warned she would not go far unless she played along. Her response was simple: “I’ll go far by God’s grace.”
Years later, the same director saw her again and said, “Stubborn girl.” Her reply? “Years have passed. God has helped me.”
Chukwunwem’s stance highlights ongoing conversations about exploitation in Nollywood, where many actresses have shared similar experiences. Rising stars like Anwulika Tonia and Kemi Ikuseedun have also spoken publicly about rejecting inappropriate advances in the industry.
Despite the challenges, Chukwunwem’s story stands as a powerful reminder that success and integrity can go hand in hand — even in an industry as demanding as Nollywood.
