Media personality Daddy Freeze has spoken openly about his failed marriage to his ex-wife, Opeyemi Olarinde, saying he only married her because she was pregnant.
In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, the former OAP revealed that he was just 24 years old when he married, while his ex-wife was 22. He explained that the pregnancy pushed him into marriage, admitting he would not have gone ahead with it otherwise.
“I only married her because she was pregnant,” Freeze confessed. “If not for that, I wouldn’t have married her.”
The broadcaster recalled the struggles in the union, saying at some point he and his ex-wife were no longer sharing the same bedroom and only went to church together to keep up appearances.
He said the collapse of the marriage left him deeply scarred. “The marriage broke me. It was two damaged people in a union, and when it ended, I lost jobs, I couldn’t see my children, and even the few jobs I got, I couldn’t handle them properly,” he said.
Freeze, who separated from Opeyemi in 2014 after allegations of adultery and domestic violence from both sides, revealed he has not seen his children in nearly a decade. “I was so broke I couldn’t afford ten thousand naira to buy a cake for my daughter’s birthday. My kids see me as the devil, the same way half of the world sees me as the devil,” he added.
He also recounted how the church treated him after the divorce. “They asked me to sit at the back of the church,” he said, describing the humiliation he went through.
Speaking about his current marriage to Benedicta Elechi, Freeze said he has never hit her, though he admitted he sometimes raises his voice. “I have never raised my hand against my wife, even though sometimes I shout,” he explained.
In 2023, the broadcaster shocked many when he disclosed that he had not seen his children in seven years and might not even recognize them if they walked past him on the street. He claimed the only contact number he had was their mother’s.
Freeze has since remarried. He tied the knot with Benedicta in a private wedding ceremony in the UK, conducted by celebrity preacher Pastor Tobi Adegboyega.
