IK Osakioduwa to host Nigerian Idol season 6

Nigerian media personality IK Osakioduwa has opened up about the personal journey that led him to change his surname.

He shared the story during a recent appearance on The Nancy Isime Show.

Previously known as IK Obiara, the popular host explained that the decision began to take shape years ago during a visit to a military hospital in Ikeja, Lagos.

He had accompanied his father, who served in the Nigerian Army, to the hospital.

While seeking medical attention, IK was asked to identify himself and state his father’s name. That moment sparked a deeper reflection on his identity and family background.

He revealed that after doing some research, he discovered that his former surname, Obiara, had spiritual ties to a deity—something that conflicted with his Christian faith. The revelation made him increasingly uncomfortable and pushed him toward making a change.

“Back then, IK’s surname was Obiara, but that encounter him to question everything was inspired by the biblical story of Jacob, whose name changed after wrestling with God,” he said.

“I started researching my own name. Then I discovered my surname is embedded in some deity somewhere. I’m like, what does that mean? No, I’m a Christian. So I was like, okay, I want a different name,” he added.

The process of changing his name wasn’t immediate. It took him around four years to convince his father. Meanwhile, his mother offered quiet support, and he spent a significant amount of time praying for guidance.

Eventually, he adopted the surname Osakioduwa, which he said means “God opens the door to wealth.” According to IK, the change marked a turning point, bringing about a positive transformation in both his personal and professional life.
