American pop star Mariah Carey has said again that she does not believe in birthdays or even the idea of time.
In a new interview on Monday, June 16, the 56-year-old singer told U.K. radio station Capital FM that she does not follow the usual idea of aging or celebrating birthdays.
“That is true,” she said when asked if she ignores the passing of time.
When one of the hosts asked her to explain, Mariah replied, “I just don’t believe in it.”
She also said she doesn’t pay attention to clocks. “Yeah. No, just let it go,” she said when asked about using clocks or checking the time.
When asked if she celebrates her birthday, the singer of hits like “Dreamlover” quickly replied, “I don’t have a birthday, no. Anniversaries, yes.”
Her unique view left the hosts a bit confused. One of them jokingly said, “But if we were to meet up later, how would we know when?” Another responded, “It’s on Mariah’s time.”
Mariah smiled and said, “Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out.”
This is not the first time she has shared her feelings about time and aging. In a 2014 interview with *Out Magazine*, she said, “I’m eternally 12 years old.” When asked how long she had been a pop star, she said she does not count years and prefers anniversaries over birthdays because, in her words, “I celebrate life, darling.”
She added with laughter, “Please put an LOL next to this because people are going to be, like, WTF?”
In 2016, she told Complex magazine that she doesn’t have a birthday and said, “I was just dropped here. It was a fairyland experience.” Later, in a 2019 interview with Variety, she repeated that her “true fans” know she’s “eternally 12.”
Mariah Carey, who has sold millions of albums worldwide, is currently working on her sixteenth studio album. The album is expected to be released later this year.
