Nigerian singer and DJ Florence Otedola, known as DJ Cuppy, made history by hosting an opening session at the United Nations General Assembly 79.
This event took place over the weekend, and DJ Cuppy anchored a session titled “The Summit of the Future – Youth Action Day.”
As the daughter of billionaire Femi Otedola and founder of the Cuppy Foundation, she brought her energy and passion for youth empowerment to the Assembly.
During her keynote speech, she excitedly said, “I’m repping a country called Nigeria, in case you’ve heard of it. Now, I’m a DJ philanthropist, but also your moderator… It feels like I’m more your co-host because today is all about you. It’s all about the youth, and I am so, so honored to be taking you on this journey today.”
DJ Cuppy encouraged the audience to take action and believe in leadership that includes everyone.
She highlighted her commitment to education, stating, “My favorite SDG is definitely for opportunity for everyone to get quality education. And at my foundation, the Cuppy Foundation, I’m so proud because we provide hardship funds for African students.”
To engage the audience, she initiated a fun interaction, saying, “So when I say youth, I want you to say action. Should we give it a go? Youth? Youth?” The crowd responded enthusiastically, cheering her on.
In a hopeful moment, she added, “Maybe I could be the first female president of Nigeria. Who knows? But you know, sometimes all we need is a bit of hope. And I feel so much hope is in this room.”
DJ Cuppy’s participation at UNGA marks her as the first British-Nigerian to host an opening session at this global event. She closed the session with an exciting musical performance that thrilled the audience.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, is in New York representing the country at the 79th UNGA.
Following instructions from President Bola Tinubu, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in various high-level meetings. Popular Nigerian singer, Davido, is also set to perform during the event.
