The race to find the next actor to portray James Bond has officially begun, signalling a new era for the legendary spy franchise following years of speculation over who will succeed Daniel Craig as 007.

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the development in a statement, saying: “The search for the next James Bond is under way.”

Reports from entertainment publication Variety indicate that auditions have already been taking place over the past few weeks, suggesting the casting process is now actively progressing.

“While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right,” Amazon added.

The announcement comes five years after the release of No Time To Die, the film that marked Craig’s final appearance as Bond. It also follows Amazon MGM Studios assuming creative control of the franchise roughly 15 months ago.

Work on the next installment is already advancing, with Dune director Denis Villeneuve attached to helm the project, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been tapped to write the screenplay.

Variety further reported that renowned casting director Nina Gold is overseeing the search for the next Bond. Gold has previously worked on several major productions and franchises, including Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Paddington, and Mamma Mia!.

A number of actors are already emerging as possible contenders for the iconic role.

Among the names gaining attention is Callum Turner, who is currently considered the bookmakers’ frontrunner. The 36-year-old is known for appearances in the Fantastic Beasts series, The Capture, and Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air, and has also drawn media attention for his relationship with Dua Lipa.

Jacob Elordi has also become a prominent candidate following his breakout performances in Euphoria and Saltburn, along with an Oscar nomination this year for Frankenstein. Industry reports suggest he may now be leading the race for the role.

Another actor reportedly under consideration is Harris Dickinson, who is expected to portray John Lennon in an upcoming Beatles biopic series. His previous screen credits include Maleficent, The King’s Man, Where the Crawdads Sing, and Babygirl.

Longtime fan favourite Henry Cavill also remains linked to the part due to his performances in Superman, The Witcher, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. However, questions persist about whether the 43-year-old would be chosen for what could become a lengthy multi-film commitment.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson continues to be strongly associated with the franchise after starring in films such as Kick-Ass, Kraven the Hunter, and 28 Years Later.

Meanwhile, Theo James is also viewed as a suitable contender, having built a strong profile through projects including Divergent, The White Lotus, and The Gentlemen.

Despite the speculation surrounding several high-profile names, reports indicate producers are still considering a broad range of possible candidates, including unexpected choices.

Whoever is eventually selected will become only the seventh official actor to portray James Bond during the franchise’s 64-year history.

Addressing the intense anticipation surrounding the casting process, Amazon MGM Studios film chief Courtenay Valenti spoke at CinemaCon about the careful approach being taken.

“I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond.

“Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.

“What I can tell you is this: When you pair one of the most beloved franchises in history with a world-class film-making team… you’re setting the stage for something that’s truly worthy of the Bond legacy.

“That film is coming, and when the time is right, we’ll have much more to share.”

Screenwriter Steven Knight has also expressed confidence in the project’s direction, saying the script is progressing smoothly.

“I am 1,000% confident that when this gets out there people are going to really love it,” he said.

So far, no official announcement has been made regarding the film’s storyline, supporting cast, or release date for the 26th Bond movie.

The project is being produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman, both of whom are known for their work on several major international film franchises.
