Lagos-based saxophonist, composer and music minister Stephen Ajimo, popularly known as Steve Sax, said his music goes far beyond talent or performance.
To him, it is a calling shaped by faith, discipline and years of steady artistic development.
Born in Akungba Akoko in Ondo State, Ajimo holds a degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Benin. His musical path began in 2004 when, as a teenage choir member, he felt drawn to the saxophone. Describing the foundation of his career, he said, “My parents, Pastor Festus and Deaconess Janet Ajimo, played a pivotal role in shaping my love for music. They supported me in every way possible, ensuring I learnt any instrument of my choice.”
He acknowledges both Nigerian and international musicians as key influences in honing his craft. Growing up, he listened to Pastor Kunle Ajayi, Mike Aremu and Segun Oluwayomi, while the works of Kenny G, Dave Koz, Kirk Whalum and Gerald Albright broadened his musical perspective.
For Steve Sax, music carries an extraordinary power. “Music is a uniting force that cuts across all boundaries. Exploring various musical styles gives one access to different cultures and opens unexpected doors,” he explained.
Two defining encounters strengthened his faith and shaped his ministry. The first occurred more than a decade ago during a church programme outside Nigeria. “All the instrumentalists left for a major event elsewhere. But my mum and I prayed, and I found a young man who could play just a few piano notes. As we began to minister, the glory of God filled the entire church. It was truly supernatural.”
The second took place in February 2024 before a crowd of over 50,000 people, when a sudden power outage halted the event for 30 minutes. “It wasn’t even my turn to minister, but I was called up with no microphone. Yet, as I played, the power of God moved mightily. How I ministered to that crowd without amplification still amazes me till today.”
Describing how he creates music, he notes that spirituality and discipline guide his work. “My inspiration comes from God.”
