How Alao-Akala changed my life – Taye Currency

Published

Popular Fuji musician based in Ibadan, Oyo State, Taye Adebisi, widely known as Taye Currency, has revealed a transformative financial intervention by the late former governor of the state, Christopher Alao-Akala.

Speaking at the annual Oshodi Day event on December 27, 2023, where he performed as a guest artist, Taye Currency shared the remarkable story of how Alao-Akala liberally supported him during the 2011 governorship campaign.

During his performance, Taye Currency reminisced about a confrontation he had with Alao-Akala in his Ogbomoso home. He had challenged the then-governor about delayed payments meant for him for campaign rallies conducted on his behalf.

Taye Currency’s boldness stemmed from a previous encounter with the late Lamidi Adedibu, where he raised concerns about unpaid royalties as a campaign mobilizer for the state chapter’s Peoples Democratic Party.

In Taye Currency’s words, “I want to share a story of how my life was turned around for good and how I became what I am today. In 2010, I was invited to join the campaign trail for the late Governor Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala. The show promoter in charge of paying me for singing during the campaign wouldn’t pay me on time.”

He went on to recount an incident where he expressed his frustration at Alao-Akala’s residence, leading to a direct confrontation with the governor.

Taye Currency revealed, “Alao-Akala then instructed that N99 million be paid to me straight away for campaigns in the 33 Local Government Areas of the state. That was how I made it. Just like that, I was shocked. After I settled everyone, I still had N60 million left.”

This financial boost played a pivotal role in Taye Currency’s career, and he expressed gratitude for Alao-Akala’s generosity. He emphasized the impact on his life, stating, “That was how I made it.”

Taye Currency’s contribution to Governor Seyi Makinde’s campaign earned him the position of Culture Ambassador in Makinde’s first term.
