The first Gay Games in Asia, co-hosted by Hong Kong and Guadalajara, has faced political opposition in the country, with some lawmakers calling for the event’s cancellation.

The Gay Games which started on Friday has encountered vocal opposition from certain quarters in Hong Kong’s “patriots only” political system, introduced by Beijing following the 2019 democracy protests.

Eight Hong Kong lawmakers supported a petition by conservative groups demanding the cancellation of the games, alleging that the event promotes LGBTQ+ rights and spreads “Western ideology.”

Junius Ho, a legislator known for his pro-Beijing stance and opposition to gay rights, claimed that the event might violate the new national security law’s provisions, which prohibit foreign interference in Hong Kong’s governance.

Another pro-Beijing lawmaker, Peter Shiu, characterized the games as advocacy rather than an ordinary sporting event.

The Gay Games organizers defended their event, asserting that it is a non-political celebration of inclusivity focused on sports and culture.

Hong Kong does not permit same-sex marriage, and there is no legislation prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

However, Hong Kong has maintained a significant LGBTQ community.
