Two-time Academy Award winner, Robert De Niro, has publicly expressed his unwavering support for his daughter Airyn, just one day after she came out as a transgender woman.
The 81-year-old Hollywood icon, in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, reaffirmed his love for Airyn, who is one of his seven children.
“I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter,” De Niro stated.
“I don’t know what the big deal is … I love all my children.”
Airyn, 29, began hormone treatment in the past year as part of her transition. She is the daughter of De Niro and actress Toukie Smith, 72.
The couple were in a relationship from 1988 until 1996 and are also parents to Airyn’s twin brother, Julian.
De Niro’s public statement of support came in the wake of an in-depth interview Airyn gave to a prominent LGBTQ+ publication, where she shared details of her coming out journey and transition experience.
