Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal has explained the Holland-Zendaya dating warning she gave the actors after they were cast as Peter Parker and MJ in the superhero franchise.
According to BBC News, Pascal admitted that she asked Tom Holland and Zendaya not to begin a romantic relationship because previous Spider-Man co-stars had also fallen in love while working together.
When asked directly whether she had warned the pair against dating, Pascal answered, “Yes,” before explaining that the same pattern had occurred with earlier stars of the franchise.
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, who played Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson in the original Spider-Man trilogy, dated after meeting through the films. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone also began a relationship after appearing as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man series.
Pascal said the repeated pattern made her concerned that another relationship between leading actors could develop when Holland and Zendaya joined the franchise.
“MJ and Peter just always fall in love. There’s nothing you can do about it,” she said.

Despite Pascal’s advice, Holland and Zendaya developed a close relationship after meeting during the production of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Their on-screen chemistry as Peter and MJ became one of the most popular elements of the film series, while public interest in their relationship continued to grow away from the cameras.
Pascal’s comments showed that she understood why actors playing emotionally connected characters could also become close in real life. Her warning was apparently intended to prevent complications that might affect the actors or future productions.
However, she admitted that the connection between Peter Parker and his love interests had repeatedly extended beyond the screen.

Pascal also discussed how the filmmakers develop stories around Peter Parker, saying they begin by identifying the emotional journey they want the character to experience.
“We always start by thinking about what is the story about Peter Parker that we want to tell,” she said.
According to the producer, maintaining Peter’s emotional development helps the creative team avoid concentrating on events that do not matter to audiences.
She explained that the character’s struggles, relationships and personal growth remain central, even when the films include major villains and large action sequences.
The approach allows viewers to connect with Peter as a young man facing difficult choices rather than seeing him only as a superhero with extraordinary abilities.
The conversation later turned to the search for the next James Bond. However, no clue was provided about the actor who could take over the role, including whether Holland might receive consideration.
