A 60-year-old fisherman, Malam Usman Maigadi, was killed by a hippopotamus on Sunday while fishing at the Yauri River in Kebbi State.

Maigadi, who worked as a guard at the Emir of Yauri’s Orchard Farm, was attacked by the animal, reportedly in defense of its young, according to Daily Post.

The Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, confirmed Maigadi’s burial, stating, “Maigadi has been buried according to Islamic rites in Yauri, after a funeral prayer.”

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State extended his condolences to the Yauri Emirate and Maigadi’s family through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris.

The governor urged the family to accept the loss with faith and prayed for Allah’s forgiveness and Jannatul Firdaus for the deceased.

Though rare, animal attacks can occur when humans come into close contact with wildlife, often when animals feel threatened or perceive danger to their young.
