Highlife legend Mike Ejeagha dies at 95 after prolonged illness

Veteran highlife musician, Mike Ejeagha, widely revered for his distinctive use of proverbs and storytelling in music, has passed away at the age of 95.

His death reportedly occurred on Friday evening around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a long battle with illness.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha.

Born on April 4, 1930, Ejeagha began his musical journey in the mid-20th century and went on to play a pivotal role in shaping highlife music, particularly in the Igbo language.

His songs, often rich in cultural wisdom and proverbial expressions, earned him a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s music history.

Ejeagha gained national prominence in 1972 when he was invited by the Nigerian Television Authority to present an Igbo cultural program titled ‘Akuko N Egwu’.

The program further cemented his place as a cultural custodian and storyteller through music.

He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
