A devastating rainstorm has wreaked havoc in the Iyah Gbedde community in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi, destroying at least 15 houses and numerous farmlands.

The incident unfolded between Tuesday and Thursday and left the community town hall in ruins.

Dr. Emmanuel Jeminiwa, the National President of the Iyah Gbede Development Association, expressed his sorrow over the situation, stating, “What’s more worrisome is that our food crops, such as yams, cassava, and maize, have been washed away by torrential rain that left us with no option.”

He emphasized that the community relied heavily on agriculture, making the loss of crops a significant blow.

Jeminiwa also pointed out that essential township roads were impassable due to the disaster, preventing farmers from accessing their affected farms.

Many families have been rendered homeless and helpless as their homes were destroyed.

He urged the federal and state governments, organizations, and individuals to come to the community’s aid, emphasizing that the damage was beyond what the community could handle.

He specifically called on agencies like the National and State Emergency Management Agency to assist.

In response, the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Victor Omofeye, confirmed that the government was aware of the incident and efforts are being made to assess the damage’s extent and assist the victims.
