Popular media personality, Dotun Ojuolape Kayode, also known as Do2dtun, has criticised reality TV star Whitemoney over a comment he made during the ceremony.
The event was held on Sunday at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos. Whitemoney had gone on stage to collect the Afrobeats Single of the Year award on behalf of singer Flavour.
However, while receiving the award, Whitemoney said he was collecting it “on behalf of the Igbos,” a comment that sparked mixed reactions both at the venue and online.
Many people felt that his statement was unnecessary, especially since the Headies Awards celebrate African music achievements, not tribal identities.
Reacting to the situation, Dotun posted on his 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) page, saying, “‘On behalf of the Igbos.’ I am sorry, that was so unnecessary. It didn’t need that type of narrative. It’s an award won by an African; for Afrobeat and a Nigerian.”
Dotun’s comment has led to a lot of discussions online about whether it is appropriate to bring up ethnic groups during national award events.
An X user, @EasYQuality, shared a different view, saying, “I think people can give a speech however they like it. I see it like he’s presenting the award to the Igbo tribe and besides, same with Iyabo Ojo’s daughter’s wedding, it can be identified as a Yoruba wedding.”
Another user, @nikkywinky, agreed with Dotun and said, “I said this too, it’s so unnecessary. Who sent him to collect the award for Flavour self because it doesn’t look like Flavour told him to do that, still went there to say unnecessary things.”
