Direct flights between Haiti and the Dominican Republic are scheduled to resume in May, both governments confirmed in a joint statement on Friday.

The decision marks the end of a suspension that lasted more than two years, after Santo Domingo closed its airspace to Haiti due to rising gang violence and instability.

According to the statement, the return of air services is expected to “energise economic ties and reinforce relations” between the two neighboring countries, which share the island of Hispaniola.

Officials view the move as an important step toward rebuilding economic and diplomatic engagement in the region.

Haiti continues to face a severe and long-running security crisis.

Gang groups control much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, where residents have endured frequent incidents of violence, including killings, sexual assaults, and kidnappings.

The situation has contributed to widespread instability and humanitarian concerns.

In March 2024, the Dominican Republic officially suspended all passenger and cargo flights originating from Haiti.

The government cited the deteriorating security situation as the reason for the airspace closure, which effectively cut direct air travel between the two countries until the latest agreement.
