Two people, including a lawyer and his client, were shot dead by gunmen in Anambra State on Thursday.

The victims were attacked in a red Toyota Camry car while driving through Egbebelu village in Nanka, located in Orumba North Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, who were on a motorcycle, blocked the victims’ car and opened fire on them. One of the victims died on the spot.

The lawyer was said to be returning from a court session at High Court II in Ekwulobia, where he had secured bail for a client in a murder case. The second victim, who was with him in the car, was identified as the client.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the victims were attacked while returning from the court session, having been trailed and double-crossed by the assailants,” Ikenga said.

According to him, a third person who was also in the car survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

“The escapee has been debriefed by the police and has provided crucial information that is aiding ongoing investigations and manhunt operations,” he added.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, visited the scene of the attack with other senior officers and detectives.

During the visit, the red Toyota Camry believed to belong to one of the deceased was recovered from the scene. The police said the bodies of the two victims have been identified by their families.

The police commissioner has ordered a full investigation and has deployed tactical and intelligence teams to find the killers.

“The Command is working round the clock to bring the attackers to justice,” Ikenga said.

The police promised to give more updates as investigations continue.
