The ward chairman of the Imo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party for Ife/Akpodim/Chokoneze Ward, Ezinihitte Mbaise council area, Smith Chiedoziem Anyanwu, has been killed by unknown assailants.
The Party’s Director of New Media, Lancelot Obiaku, confirmed the news to newsmen in Owerri on Friday.
He stated, “It is true that the incident happened,” but did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the murder.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the assailants, numbering two and riding on a motorbike, carried out the gruesome act in the presence of the victim’s wife last Thursday.
The attackers reportedly approached the wife, inquired about her husband, and upon identifying him, fired several shots before leaving the scene.
The killing of the PDP ward chairman adds to the challenges faced by the Party, which recently experienced setbacks in the November 11, 2023, Governorship election in the state.
As of the time of reporting, the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Henry Okoye, had not responded to inquiries about the incident.
