Gunmen shot and killed a former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Mutiu Akinbami, on Friday evening in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Akinbami, popularly called Egor, was reportedly riding on a motorcycle with his son when he was attacked near Brewery Bus Stop, close to Olomoore Junction.

A source, who requested anonymity, said, “The incident happened around 6:30 pm. The gunmen, who were in a tinted Toyota Hilux, appeared to have followed him from his house at Olomoore Federal Housing Estate. They caught up with him on the road and opened fire.”

Ogun State Police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. She said, “The Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa received a report at about 6:40 pm that Mutiu Akinbami, from Olomoore Housing Estate, was shot while riding home on a motorcycle. The gunmen, masked and in an unregistered white tinted Hilux, shot him from behind.”

Police officers arrived at the scene and took Akinbami to Ijaiye General Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead.

Odutola added, “Preliminary investigations show the late Akinbami was a known member of the Eiye confraternity and had once held a top position at the Federal College of Education Osiele. He had also been listed as wanted. Arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.”

This killing comes weeks after Adeleke Adeyinka, the All Progressives Congress councilorship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government, was killed by suspected cultists in Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta.
