Gunmen kill Babcock professor, abduct two others
Unknown gunmen reportedly killed a Babcock University professor and abducted two others in the Iperu area of Ogun State.
Professor Yinka Olomojobi, a respected figure in the law department of the university, was shot dead by the assailants when he allegedly refused to be taken away.
Reports suggest that the incident occurred at the Ajadeh Event Centre on Sagamu Road in Iperu, where the gunmen, dressed in black and armed with guns, stormed the venue and opened fire indiscriminately.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing how the gunmen singled out Prof Olomojobi and fatally shot him in the chest for resisting abduction. Meanwhile, a manager of a car stand known as Dare and another individual were reportedly taken captive by the gunmen.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Omolola Odutola, stated that one person had been arrested in connection with the crime. The arrested individual, identified as Awada Ishaya from Plateau State, had been employed as a security guard at the event centre two weeks prior to the incident.
“A report from the Iperu Division indicates that a kidnapping and murder incident occurred on the 19th of April, 2024, at about 9:20 pm,” said Odutola. “Efforts are underway to apprehend the culprits and rescue the kidnapped victims.”
The slain professor was rushed to Babcock University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The police have launched a discreet investigation into the matter and vowed to provide further updates as the situation unfolds.
