Gunmen kill 11 in fresh attack on Plateau community
Gunmen believed to be killer herdsmen launched another deadly attack on the Kulben community in Kunbum District, Mangu local government area of Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of eleven people, the destruction of property, and injuries to several others.
The assailants, numbering in the hundreds and suspected to be killer herdsmen, struck around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday when residents were preparing to rest.
As they entered the community, they opened fire indiscriminately, targeting mostly those trying to flee. The attack, which lasted for over an hour, witnessed the destruction of crops, the burning of numerous houses, and injuries, particularly among children and women.
A source within the community reported, “Armed Fulani Militia attacked Kulben Community in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government. The incident, which occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, left 11 people killed, others injured, and property destroyed.”
The victims of the attack, numbering eleven, were given a mass burial at approximately 12:30 pm on Monday, accompanied by grief and lamentation from the community. Those injured were transported to Mangu General Hospital for medical treatment.
Dr. Elisha, the Chairman of Mwaghavul Development Association in Kombun District, also confirmed the attack, stating, “From the information I got, 10 people were killed during the invasion. I’m on my way to the village.”
The Plateau State Police Command is aware of the incident but is awaiting a report from the Divisional Police Officer responsible for the area. Captain James Oya, the Media Officer of Operation Safe Haven, could not be reached for comment at the time of reporting.
The attack on the Kulben community adds to the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, where communities have been plagued by violence and insecurity, resulting in the loss of lives and property.
