A former House of Representatives member and ex-Commissioner for Technical Education, Joan Onyemaechi Mrakpor, was abducted by unidentified gunmen at her church in Asaba, Delta State.
The attack, which occurred around 5 pm on Tuesday, resulted in the death of a police officer and left Mrakpor’s driver wounded.
Eyewitnesses report that the kidnappers stormed the church, located off Delta Broadcasting Service Asaba, in a hail of gunfire.
The slain police officer, identified as Mrakpor’s personal orderly, was killed while attempting to protect the former legislator.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the attack.
Edafe stated. He added, “We are on the trail of the kidnappers and very soon, I believe we will get them.”
Mrakpor represented the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal constituency in the House of Representatives in 2015 and also served as a lawmaker for the Aniocha South at the Delta State House of Assembly from 2007 to 2015.
She was appointed as the Commissioner for Technical Education by the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori before she later resigned earlier this year.
