A senior staff member of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Mr Omoniyi Eleyinmi, has been kidnapped by suspected gunmen in Supare-Akoko, Ondo State.
The incident happened on Monday night shortly after Mr Eleyinmi returned home from work. He is a Faculty Officer in the Faculty of Education and a member of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said two AAUA staff were initially abducted, but one was quickly rescued by police operatives.
“Two AAUA staff were abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers. However, our men responded quickly and were able to rescue one,” Ayanlade said.
He added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has ordered the debriefing of the rescued victim to aid further investigation and search efforts.
Sources within the university said the attack took place around 7:00 p.m. along the Akungba-Supare road. A lecturer who asked not to be named said the gunmen arrived shooting into the air to scare people before seizing Mr Eleyinmi.
“One of our SSANU members, Mr Omoniyi Eleyinmi, was kidnapped at his residence this evening at Supare-Akoko. He had just returned from work when the incident occurred,” the source said.
The victim’s wife, who narrowly escaped the attack, explained that the kidnappers had already arrived and were firing shots when her husband returned home. He was immediately captured and taken away.
As of the time of this report, Mr Eleyinmi’s location remains unknown. Police said operations are still ongoing in the area.
