Suspected armed robbers have attacked student hostels at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ibogun Campus, in a late-night operation that caused widespread panic as students fled for safety.

The assault reportedly started around midnight and continued into the early hours of Saturday, with more than a dozen gunmen invading several hostels, firing intermittently, and carting away phones, laptops, and other personal belongings.

An X user, Michael Mabayomije, who recounted the incident online, stated that the attackers operated unchallenged for several minutes, leaving behind injured victims and traumatised students.

Traces of blood, believed to belong to some of the injured, were allegedly found on walls and floors within one of the affected hostels.

Residents of Ibogun described the situation as tense and chaotic, with gunfire ringing across the campus while students struggled to escape. Some individuals reportedly sustained injuries during attempts to flee or resist the attackers.

When reached for comment, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that an investigation into the incident was underway.

Babaseyi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer of Ibogun Division, along with the Area Commander, had been deployed to the scene to evaluate the situation and reassure both students and residents of their safety.
