One of the wives of Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, has been reportedly kidnapped after an attack on his house in the early hours of Thursday by gunmen.
WuzupNigeria reported that at least two persons were killed during the attack as photos from the scene of the attack showed trails of blood, walls, and vehicles riddled with bullets.
The PUNCH, quoting the leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, Emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye, reported that several others were also kidnapped alongside Igboho’s wife whose name remains unknown.
Recall that the attack on Igboho’s home comes 72 hours to the Yoruba Nation rally slated for Saturday, July 3rd in Lagos which will be attended by Akintoye and the activist himself.
Speaking further in a personally signed statement made available to newsmen by his Communications Manager, Mr. Maxwell Adeleye, Akintoye claimed that seven people were killed during the attack.
The statement was titled, ‘Yoruba Nation: Elements of the Nigerian Army, Accompanied by International Terrorists hired by the Nigerian State attacked Sunday Ighoho’s Residence – Akintoye.’
According to the Communications Manager, Akintoye alleged that “the assailants were all dressed in military uniform and spoke French language fluently.”
He further said that “the gunmen killed seven occupants in the building and whisked Igboho’s wife and several others away.”
Igboho, at various times, had supported the secessionist agitation of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who is in the custody of the Nigerian security forces for alleged terrorism-related charges.
Thursday attack is one of the many reported attacks on Igboho and his Ibadan residence since January 2021 when he issued a seven-day ultimatum to killer herders in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.
Previous Attacks on Igoho
This would not be the first attack by unknown gunmen on the home of the activist who has been championing the secessionist move for the creation of a Yoruba Nation.
Recall that Igboho’s Soka residence in Ibadan was gutted on January 26, 2021, after some faceless hoodlums reportedly attacked the resident.
The was also a chaotic confrontation with men identified as operatives of the Department of State Services during an attempt to arrest Igboho on February 26, 2021, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on the orders of then Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, according to Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu.
Although the DSS denied the attempted arrest that failed, the activist and his supporters were seen in a viral video daring and throwing expletives at the security operatives.
