A urologist at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, was abducted by gunmen on Tuesday evening.

The incident reportedly took place at the gate of Dr. Onuigbo’s residence in Nnewi as he returned from work.

Eyewitnesses said the armed men intercepted Dr. Onuigbo at his residence, forcing him into their vehicle before driving off.

One witness stated, “The medical doctor was rounded up by some armed men, suspected to be kidnappers, as he was about to enter the gate of his residence. They had a brief conversation with him before asking him to get into their vehicle and drove away.”

So far, the kidnappers have not contacted the family, but relatives are reportedly making efforts to secure his release.

A staff member of NAUTH, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident. “The institution is aware of the incident, and we are doing the needful. That’s all I can say for now,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed the abduction.

“Yes, the command is aware of the kidnap. We have already mobilised for the rescue of the doctor. The commissioner, CP Obono Itam, has given orders for this, and our men are actively working on the case,” Ikenga assured.

The abduction has left the Nnewi community and the medical fraternity in shock. Dr. Onuigbo’s family and colleagues are hopeful for his safe return as security forces intensify their efforts.
