The Kano Peace Committee has issued a strong caution to youths in Kano State, urging them to refrain from joining the planned October 1 protest.

The group voiced concerns about potential violence and the risk of destruction to both public and private properties.

As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence anniversary, the KPC emphasized the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence in the state. Ibrahim Waiya, Convener and Head of Secretariat for the KPC, highlighted the dangers posed by a “sponsored campaign” aimed at mobilizing Kano youths for another round of the “End Bad Governance” protests.

Waiya condemned the campaign as “misleading, unpatriotic, and ill-timed,” pointing to the devastating aftermath of the protests that took place between August 1-10, 2024.

“Kano State experienced one of its worst nightmares, with billions of naira in damages and loss of lives,” Waiya stated, reflecting on the severe economic, social, and commercial setbacks the protests caused. “The protest rubbished our reputation, integrity, respect, and honour.”

The KPC also reminded youths of the consequences faced by previous protest participants, many of whom are still in jail, having been abandoned by those who incited the violence. ”

“We urge youths to use their brains and think critically, avoiding manipulation by selfish politicians,” Waiya said.

“It’s time to emancipate ourselves from political manipulation and rediscover ourselves as honourable human beings, equal to all others.”

Waiya further expressed appreciation for the efforts of security agencies in maintaining peace in the state, urging them to continue operating within the confines of the law.

“We must protect and preserve Kano State’s integrity, honour, and respect,” he stressed, calling for collective action to safeguard the state’s peace and security.
