Celine Dion made a surprising appearance at the 2024 Grammys on Sunday amid her ongoing struggle with incurable stiff-person syndrome.
The 55-year-old star, who has taken a step back from her singing career due to health issues, was visibly moved as she took the stage with the support of her eldest son, Rene-Charles Angelil, 23.
The audience erupted into cheers and a standing ovation as Dion presented the Album of the Year award.
Expressing her gratitude, Dion said, “Thank you, all! I love you right back. You look beautiful. When I say I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart.”
She emphasized the importance of music in bringing joy and love to people worldwide before announcing the Album of the Year nominees.
Dion presented the award to Taylor Swift for her acclaimed album “Midnights,” making Swift the first person to win the accolade four times. Dion, looking stunning in a terracotta coat and chiffon dress, handed Swift the award on stage.
However, some fans noted that Swift did not acknowledge Dion during the moment, quickly turning to celebrate with her collaborators instead.
Despite this, there seemed to be no animosity between the two iconic figures, as they happily posed together backstage.
Following her health battle, Dion’s journey will be documented in the upcoming documentary, “I Am: Celine Dion.”
Diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome in December 2022, Dion announced her hiatus from performing. The documentary, filmed over more than a year, chronicles her efforts to continue her career and raise awareness about the condition.
Reflecting on her challenges, Dion stated, “This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me, the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me. As the road to resuming my performing career continues, I have realized how much I have missed it, of being able to see my fans.”
