Govt to govt efforts have failed, Shehu Sani proffers solution to killings of Nigerians in South Africa
Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has proffered a solution to the frequent killings of Nigerians in South Africa xenophobic attacks.
The lawmaker who said government to government approach has failed to end the increasing killings of Nigerian nationals living in the country advised corporate organisations owned by South Africans operating in Nigeria to step in where government’s efforts have failed.
His suggestion is coming a day after the Nigerian Senate fumed over the number of Nigerians murdered in South Africa which has risen to 127 in three and a half years.
The Red Chamber had warned the South African government to halt the frequent killings of Nigerians by its citizens to avoid grave consequences.
The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who issued the warning at plenary on Wednesday, warned that the South African government must extend due respect to Nigeria and should not take the good gesture towards it for granted.
The Senate also summoned the Nigerian ambassador to South Africa to explain the circumstances that led to the alleged murder of the Deputy Director-General of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, Elizabeth Ndubusi-Chukwu, in the country recently.
In a tweet via his verified Twitter handle @ShehuSani, on Thursday, Sani suggested that to end the killings, South African multinational firms based in Nigeria need to do more and step up to the embarrassing trend where Nigerians are unjustifiably killed in South Africa.
He tweeted:
The Multi billion dollar South African firms based in Nigeria should do more and lead the way, in building a strong initiative towards bringing an end to the unjustified and systemic murder of Nigerians residing in South Africa. Govt to Govt efforts has failed to stop the killings.
