The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has pledged to improve security and protect lives and property in response to the planned nationwide protest scheduled from August 1 to 10.
The protest, led by various groups, is driven by concerns over the rising cost of living and economic difficulties faced by Nigerians.
In a statement released on Thursday, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who chairs the NGF, emphasized the need for strong security measures to ensure safety during the upcoming protests. This announcement came after the Forum’s meeting early Thursday morning.
The NGF meeting included a presentation by Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mohammed Pate. He updated the governors on the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Programme, including the Sector-Wide Approach, Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, Primary Health Care Revitalisation, and National Supply Chain Management.
The communiqué read, “The NGF received a briefing from the National Security Adviser’s office on the current security situation. The NSA noted the growing momentum for the planned protest and is committed to supporting the governors in improving security.”
“The governors thanked the NSA and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the security of lives and properties in their states,” the statement continued.
The Forum also welcomed Mr. Ndiame Diop, the new Country Director of the World Bank, and his team. They discussed ongoing programs like HOPE (Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equality), Food and Nutrition Security, and SPIN (Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Products).
The governors assured Mr. Diop of their support for these initiatives. Additionally, they were briefed by the body of State Attorneys General on the Supreme Court’s July 11 judgment, which affirmed the financial independence of local governments.
The statement concluded, “Members received a briefing from the Nigerian Bar Association on their recent leadership change and other initiatives. The NBA expressed their commitment to collaborating with the states to defend democracy and uphold the rule of law.”
