Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has praised the peaceful chairmanship and councillorship elections held across all 44 local government areas in Kano on Saturday.

Thousands of residents participated in the election, even though police and other federal security agencies were not involved in the process.

Speaking to journalists at the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission headquarters, where he cast his vote in Gwale Local Government Area, Governor Yusuf called the elections “the freest in Kano’s history.” The elections took place in 484 wards, with voters actively turning out across the state.

The governor assured the people that those elected would work for the benefit of Kano residents, saying, “When it comes to elections, there shouldn’t be any impunity, and we should ensure that people are allowed to freely exercise their franchise.” He also emphasized the importance of neutrality in the judiciary, asking the courts to avoid partisanship in election matters, adding, “It is not good for our judiciary to be partisan.”

Governor Yusuf expressed confidence in the New Nigeria People’s Party, which holds leadership in the state, saying they were well-supported by Kano’s people. He urged opposition parties to accept the election results peacefully and learn to accept defeat, stating, “We have the upper hand in terms of voter support.”

Aliyu Suleiman, representing the Sokoto State Electoral Commission, also commended the smooth conduct of the elections, adding to the positive feedback on the peaceful voting atmosphere.
