Gombe FRSC records 14 deaths in 46 crashes
The Federal Road Safety Corps , Gombe State Command, said it recorded no fewer than 14 deaths in 46 crashes during Operation Zero Crash campaign.
The 2021 Operation Zero Crash campaign lasted between December14, 2021 and January 15.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Ishaku Ibrahim, said this in Gombe during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Ibrahim said that within the period under review, 294 people were involved in the crashes while 136 sustained various degrees of injury.
He said that though the number of crashes reduced in 2021 when compared to that of 2020, the number of death remained a source of concern to the Corps.
He said that the disturbing issue with the 2021 operation was the increase in the number of motorcycles involved in the crashes recorded during the period.
“From the analysis of vehicles involved in the crashes in 2020 and 2021, we discovered that in 2020, motorcycles involved in the crashes were 17 but in 2021, 42 motorcycles were involved.
“Generally, in the number of vehicles involved, there has been increase, however, motorcycles were involved in more serious accidents”, he said.
Ibrahim said that the major causes of crashes recorded included: speeding, dangerous `taking one way’, dangerous overtaking and mechanically deficient vehicles which sometimes led to break failures.
He urged motorists to minimise night journeys, saying that most crashes that result to death occurred at nights.
He said that in 2022 FRSC in the Gombe would intensify sensitisation of motorists to the implications of dangerous driving while also enforcing compliance to road safety rules.
The Sector Commander also told NAN that the Command would leverage mobile courts for speedy trial of suspected road transport regulation violators.
