Why center referee for Nigeria, Zambia clash will be very strict

Published

FIFA referee, Ghead Grisha has been appointed as the referee for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Zambia and Nigeria in Ndola, Zambia on Sunday, October 9, 2016.

It is not the first time the Egyptian would be in the center for a Nigeria-Zambia tie. The 40-year-old was in charge of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage clash between the Super Eagles and the Chipolopolo, at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, South Africa on January 25 2013.

The second group C match for the Super Eagles ended in a one all draw after Grisha awarded a controversial penalty kick to the Chipolopolo four minutes to the end of the game.

The Nigeria Football Federation had officially logged a complaint to CAF, resulting in the suspension of  the Egyptian from officiating another match. Nigeria went ahead to win the championship, beating Burkina Faso one nil in finals.

Two years later Ghead Grisha was nominated for the Glo CAF Referee of The Year award, but he lost the prize to Gambian referee, Gassama Bakary.  Though it can not be proved that the South Africa 2013 event affected the award, the center referee who will be assisted by fellow Egyptians Tahssen Abo El Sadat Bedyer (assistant referee 1), Ahmed Hossameldin Taha (assistant referee 2) and Ibrahim Noureldin (Fourth Official) is expected to be more careful to avoid being labelled dubious all over again.
