Rescue works are underway to save miners trapped in a mine pit accident in Ghana, the police told Xinhua.
The Spokesman for the police in Ashanti Region in Ghana, ASP Godwin Ahianyo said the rescue team was using an excavator to clear the grounds and save those trapped in the collapsed pit.
A mining pit caved early Thursday at Akrokerri, a town about 230 km northwest of Ghana’s capital city Accra, while some miners were underground.
Police could not give the actual number of victims, but a survivor told his rescuers that there were many people underground.
The site of the accident is near a public toilet facility in the centre of the Akrokerri town.
