Ghana eyes joint World Cup bid with Nigeria, Ivory Coast

Ghana’s Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, says the country could soon join Nigeria and Ivory Coast to bid for the FIFA World Cup as co-hosts.

He explained that FIFA’s new direction of awarding hosting rights to multiple countries has opened the door for West Africa to push for a future edition.

Adams said during an engagement that Ghana is already working closely with other ministries to build a coordinated plan for future bids. He noted that if the opportunity comes, Ghana will not hesitate to join Nigeria and Ivory Coast, who both have strong infrastructure from recent tournaments.

He said “They are beginning to adopt a number of nations doing it so maybe who knows, the next one would be Ghana, Nigeria, and then Côte d’Ivoire coming together to also host the World Cup and it will be good.”

He said “I believe that we, together with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, who have already invested quite a lot because they hosted AFCON not too long ago, can also ask for that right.”

Adams explained that earlier meetings with the foreign affairs ministry and the FA were part of building a united approach towards future hosting plans.

He said “We want to give our fans joy to be in these three countries that host the competition. This is happening for the first time. Previous World Cups we have participated in have been single nation hosting. This is the first time three nations are going to be hosting.”

He added that the idea is possible because Ghana is also improving its sports facilities.

The minister also praised the foreign affairs ministry for leading earlier preparatory talks, saying the collaboration will continue.

Meanwhile, former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco are the main favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking at the 2025 CAF Awards, he said Nigeria’s quality and experience make them one of the strongest teams going into the tournament.

He said “African football has grown so fast. The competition is tougher now, and that’s why tournaments like AFCON are becoming more exciting.”

He said “Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco look very strong. They are definitely favourites for the 2025 title.”

Nigeria finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON, Ivory Coast are defending champions, and hosts Morocco hope to win their first title since 1976.

The 2025 AFCON kicks off on December 12 in Morocco.
