A German tourist was found dead Tuesday at a Mayan archaeological site in northern Guatemala where he disappeared two days earlier, the government said.
The body of Stephan Baitz, 53, was found in the Tikal National Park home to Mayan ruins, Guatemala’s culture ministry said in a statement.
Baitz was visiting the site on Sunday, but separated from the rest of his tour group to explore the trails, the ministry said in a statement.
Images shared by the defense force, which aided in the search, showed a body on a leaf-covered path some seven kilometers (4.3 miles) from the site’s central attraction.
The culture ministry, public prosecutor’s office and forensic sciences institute will work together to determine the cause of death and to expatriate the body, said the statement.
Tikal is one of Guatemala’s main tourist attractions.
