A man jailed at Burg Prison in eastern Germany is being investigated for allegedly killing his wife during a private visit inside the prison.

The 35-year-old woman was found dead shortly after visiting her 37-year-old husband in one of the prison’s long-term visitor rooms.

These rooms are not monitored, as they are meant to give inmates privacy when meeting with family members.

The visit happened earlier this week at Burg Prison, located in the Saxony-Anhalt region of Germany.

According to prosecutors in the city of Stendal, the husband is now facing charges on suspicion of manslaughter. Police believe the woman was killed during the unsupervised meeting.

An autopsy is being carried out to confirm the exact cause of death, with results expected early next week.

The police department in Stendal is leading the investigation.

Burg Prison, where the incident took place, is one of the largest and most modern prisons in Germany. It was built in 2009 and holds up to 650 male inmates.
