Wales head coach Warren Gatland is expected to step down midway through the Six Nations tournament following a record 14 consecutive international defeats, according to widespread reports on Tuesday.

Wales, who finished last in the Six Nations last year after losing all five matches, are facing another tough campaign. They recently suffered a 22-15 defeat against Italy, adding to their disappointing performance.

Their next matches include facing defending champions Ireland on February 22 in Cardiff, followed by an away game against Scotland and a home clash with England.

The Daily Mail reported that the Welsh Rugby Union is likely to officially announce Gatland’s departure later on Tuesday.

Several names have been linked as possible replacements, including former Australia coach Michael Cheika, Glasgow coach Franco Smith, and Ireland interim boss Simon Easterby.

Wales has dropped to 12th in the world rankings after their poor run of form.

Gatland’s position came under review after Wales’ disappointing performances in the November internationals. The 61-year-old New Zealander, who is contracted until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, had previously acknowledged that his job was at risk following a challenging 2024.

“I am conscious and well aware that if things don’t improve, then there is likely to be a change from the union,” Gatland admitted before the start of the Six Nations.

He added, “I have been pretty straight up about it, but for me, it is about rising to the challenge of making sure we go out there and perform well.”

Gatland returned to coach Wales in December 2022, replacing Wayne Pivac. However, his second spell has been less successful compared to his first tenure from 2007 to 2019, during which he led Wales to four Six Nations titles, including three Grand Slams, and guided the team to two World Cup semi-finals.
