Ganduje condemns Kano govt’s arrest call as reckless

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and immediate past Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has dismissed the Kano State government’s call for his arrest over alleged comments on the creation of a militia group, describing the move as unfounded and irresponsible.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje said the demand for his arrest was “reckless, baseless,” and an indication of what he described as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s “desperation and incompetence.”

He argued that the allegation was a diversionary tactic by the current administration, insisting that it reflects a failure of leadership at a time when the state is grappling with rising security threats.

According to him, “It is deeply unfortunate that rather than addressing the escalating insecurity ravaging the state, Governor Yusuf has chosen to chase shadows while searching for scapegoats to conceal his glaring failures. At a time when communities such as Bagwai, Shanono, and Tsanyawa, other affected areas are living in fear, the governor has neither visited nor shown empathy toward the victims. His continued absence in moments that require leadership speaks volumes of his disconnect from the people he claims to serve.”

Ganduje also emphasized that he has never been associated with violence or any activity that could destabilize Kano, asserting that his tenure as governor was marked by sustained peace and security throughout his eight years in office. The statement noted that his record contrasts sharply with what he termed the current administration’s “ineptitude and lack of direction.”

The statement urged Governor Yusuf to prioritize his constitutional responsibilities by ensuring the safety of residents rather than engaging in “political theatrics” or circulating unsubstantiated claims.

Ganduje added that true leadership “is demonstrated through purposeful action, responsibility, and compassion,” not through “press conferences and issuing frivolous statements aimed at diverting public attention from one’s failures.”
