President Adama Barrow of The Gambia paid a visit to Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu on Friday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The visit followed a condolence stop at the residence of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who recently passed away.

Addressing journalists after his meeting, Barrow described the late Buhari as “a friend, brother, and father figure,” lauding the former leader’s humility and commitment to leadership.

“I came to extend my condolences to him and to the family of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari,” Barrow said.

“Buhari was our colleague. He was a friend and he was a brother. He was a father figure to us and he was a very humble president—a great man, a great president, a great leader. His humbleness is something we should all emulate. If we emulate him, I believe it will move Africa to the next level.”

Reflecting on Buhari’s influence in The Gambia’s political development, Barrow highlighted the role he played in upholding democratic principles in the country.

According to Barrow, the late Nigerian president was instrumental in ensuring the Gambian people’s mandate was respected during a pivotal period in the nation’s history.

“He contributed to make sure that the voice of the Gambian people is respected. He contributed to consolidate democracy in our country. Because of this reason, I cannot be ungrateful,” Barrow stated.

He further noted that Buhari’s contributions would leave a lasting legacy on the African continent.

“We will remember him. He will not be forgotten because he has a legacy—a good legacy,” he said.
