The much-anticipated unified heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could be called off after former WBC champion, Deontay Wilder, won a legal ruling for a third fight.

Recall that Fury on May 16 confirmed the date and venue for his unified fight with Joshua after months of lengthy negotiation.

“…this fight is 100 per cent on. August 14, 2021. Summertime. All eyes of the world will be on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and I cannot wait, repeat, cannot wait, to smash Anthony Joshua on the biggest stage of all time,” Fury said on Twitter.

However, TalkSport on Tuesday reported that Wilder who had dispute resolution provision within the contract matter to legal arbitration won the ruling.

Wilder and Fury’s first fight in 2018 ended in a split decision but they signed a two-fight deal in 2020 so as to settle the scores once and for all.

Fury decimated Wilder in what could be regarded as a flawless victory to clinch the  WBC heavyweight title but there was uncertainty about the third fight.

Down but not out, the American then activated his clause to force a trilogy contest but the fight was delayed as a result of an injury to Wilder and various pandemic issues, amongst others.

With no agreement forthcoming, TalkSport reported that Fury’s team moved on with belief that the contract had expired before Wilder called for a legal clause.

The arbitrator presiding over the matter – retired judge Daniel Weinstein – has now ruled in Wilder’s favour, according to ESPN’s Mark Kriegel.

Reports revealed that the judge has set a deadline, insisting that Fury and Wilder’s third fight must hold by September 15.

While the three fighters remain mum on the matter at the time of the report, uncertainty remains on the possibility of the AJ vs Fury fight billed for August 14.

It is either the undisputed fight is salvaged with a financial settlement for Wilder, or a legal injunction will force the ‘Gypsy King’ to face the ‘Bronze Bomber’ once more.
