Grammy-winning artist Tyla claimed the Best Afrobeats award at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, England.
She won over fellow nominees Rema, Tems, Asake, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy in yet another defeat for Nigerians.
The 2024 MTV EMAs celebrated its 30th edition with top artists from around the world coming together to honor standout performances and fresh talent.
Held at the Co-op Arena, the show, hosted by Rita Ora, featured energetic performances that showcased the diversity and impact of music worldwide.
On stage, Tyla expressed her gratitude, recognizing how her fellow nominees have helped bring Afrobeats to an international audience. She gave heartfelt thanks to her family, friends, and fans for their ongoing support.
“Other nominees have taken Afrobeats so far; I’m honored to win this award,” Tyla said. “I want to thank my team, family, and fans, (the Tigers), for voting for me.”
In September, Tyla also won the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards defeating Nigerian artiste.
The awards night also recognized major figures in music history. Rapper Busta Rhymes received the Global Icon award for his contributions to music, while the Pet Shop Boys were celebrated as Pop Pioneers.
Taylor Swift emerged as the evening’s biggest winner, taking home four awards, including Best US Act, Best Video, Best Artist, and Best Live. Other regional awards went to Shawn Mendes as Best Canadian Act and Yeri Mua as Best Latin America North Act.
