Transparency International has ranked Nigeria as the 36th most corrupt country in the world in its 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, maintaining the same position it held in 2024.
The country, however, slid in overall ranking—from 140th out of 182 countries in 2024 to 142nd in 2025, where 1 represents the cleanest country and 182 the most corrupt.
Nigeria scored 26 points on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). It shared the 142nd position with Cameroon, Guatemala, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan, and Papua New Guinea.
Denmark remained the least corrupt country with 89 points, followed by Finland (88), Singapore (84), and New Zealand and Norway (81 each). No African nation made the top 10.
In Africa, Seychelles (68), Cabo Verde (62), and Botswana (58) were ranked the least corrupt. South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela were the world’s most corrupt.
Transparency International’s CEO, Maíra Martini, said the global average fell to a new low of 42, with more than two-thirds of countries scoring below 50.
She warned of a “concerning picture of long-term decline in leadership to tackle corruption,” noting that even established democracies like the US, UK, and New Zealand have seen performance drops.
Martini urged leaders to act against abuses of power and to protect civic space, emphasizing that anti-government protests globally show people are “fed up with unaccountable leadership and are demanding reform.”
