The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that German coach Bruno Labbadia has been appointed as the new Head Coach of Nigeria’s Senior Men’s National Team, the Super Eagles.

This decision follows the resignation of Finidi George, who was appointed on April 29, 2024, and stepped down on June 8, 2024, just a month after his appointment.

Finidi faced several challenges, including a disappointing 1-1 draw against South Africa and a subsequent 1-0 loss to Benin Republic. These results jeopardized Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, especially after missing out on the 2022 tournament.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, confirmed the Labbadia appointment, stating, “The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect.”

The Super Eagles have had a long history of various coaches leading the team, with some achieving significant success.

Notable coaches include Clemens Westerhof, who led the team to victory in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, and Stephen Keshi, who won the same tournament in 2013.
