Nigerian music stars Burna Boy and Tems have secured nominations for the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. As a result, Nigeria remains represented across major categories at this year’s ceremony.
According to The Punch, the nominations were announced on Tuesday. This occurred ahead of the awards ceremony scheduled to hold at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27.
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, earned two nominations for “Dai Dai,” his collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira. Notably, it is also the official song of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Burna Boy earns two nominations
The Grammy-winning Nigerian singer was nominated in the Best Collaboration category alongside Shakira.
Their song will compete against Clipse, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T and Malice for “Chains & Whips”. Additionally, French Montana and Max B for “Ever Since U Left Me”; Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love”; PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson for “Stateside”; and Teyana Taylor and Lucky Daye for “Hard Part.”
“Dai Dai” also earned Burna Boy a place in the Best Latin category.
The collaboration will compete with songs from Anitta and Shakira, Bad Bunny, Fuerza Regida, Karol G, Rosalía featuring Yahritza y Su Esencia. Furthermore, Ryan Castro, Kapo and Gangsta are also in the category.
Tems competes for Best R&B
Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, received a nomination in the Best R&B category. This was for “Raindance,” her collaboration with British rapper Dave.
They will compete against Bruno Mars’ “I Just Might,” Chris Brown’s “It Depends/Obvious,” Justin Bieber’s “Yukon.” Moreover, they face Kehlani’s “Folded,” and Mariah the Scientist and Kali Uchis’ “Is It a Crime.”
The nomination adds to Tems’ growing list of international recognitions following her success across the global R&B and Afrobeats scenes.
Madonna leads nominations
Madonna leads the 2026 MTV VMA nominations with 11 nods, while Taylor Swift follows with nine.
The ceremony will air live on CBS, with a simulcast on MTV and streaming through Paramount+.
Fans will be able to vote in most categories daily until September 25 at 6pm ET.
Afrobeats category missing
The Best Afrobeats category, which featured in previous editions of the awards, is absent from the 2026 nominations.
South African singer Tyla won the category in 2025 with “Push 2 Start.” She defeated Nigerian nominees including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, Tems and Asake.
Tyla also won the category in 2024 with “Water.” In contrast, Rema and Selena Gomez claimed the inaugural Best Afrobeats award in 2023 for their global hit “Calm Down.”
The MTV Video Music Awards, established in 1984, recognise achievements in music videos, songs and artistry. Winners receive the event’s famous Moonperson trophy.
