Suspected Fulani herdsmen killed 310 people in Gwer West local government area of Benue State in eight years, the community leader has said.
The traditional ruler in the council area, His Royal Highness, Chief Daniel Abomtse who disclosed this on Tuesday said that the people were killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the 39 attacks that took place between February 8, 2011, and April 2, 2019.
“Gwer West local government is one of the worst hit of the Fulani herdsmen attack, according to the statistics I have, they have carried out 39 attacks on communities in the local government.
“From this 39 attack, over 310 people were killed and 13 people were also injured, all this happened between February 8, 2011 and April 2, 2019.”
Abomtse disclosed this while playing host to the State Working Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Benue State Council in his palace at Naka.
The monarch lamented that his subjects were still in excruciating pains as a result of constant attack on the local government for the eighth years.
Chief Abomtse who decried the continuous attack on his domain as well as ravaging of Benue Community by the herders called for concerted efforts by all to address the issue.
While appreciating the role of the media in the society, the monarch challenged the new Exco of the Union (NUJ) to leave legacies behind for others to emulate noted that the Union needs a conducive environment to operate, saying if Journalists fail in their duty, the whole world will collapse.
Earlier in her address, the State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Victoria Asher, said they were in his palace to condole with the Ter Tyoshin over the frequent attacks on his people by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Comrade Asher who prayed God to give the Traditional Ruler the wisdom of King Solomon to rule over his people encouraged him not to relent in his efforts at resisting the invasion and take over of the people’s ancestral land by the suspected Fulani herders.
The NUJ Chairman assured him that the Union will continue to partner with his palace in the area of publicity to attract attention to the plight of his people and urged him not to forget his root, the Journalism profession.
