Four young men have drowned in Kano State after getting trapped in a blocked waterway in Zangon Kaya, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident on Friday through its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.
He said the tragedy happened on Friday afternoon after an emergency call was made around 1:48 pm by one Rabiu Yusif.
“We received an emergency call at about 13:48 hrs from one Rabiu Yusif that four people had fallen into a waterway blocked that had accumulated due to the railway line construction,” Abdullahi said.
He explained that two of the victims went into the waterway to swim but got trapped. Another person entered to rescue them but also got stuck. The fourth person followed and also got trapped.
Abdullahi said the rescue team arrived quickly, and with help from residents, managed to pull out two of the victims. The team recovered the other two.
“All the victims were rescued unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” he said.
The victims were identified as Bashir Sani, 28, Nasirudden Tasi’u, 25, Usman Ubale, 26, and Yakubu Muhammed, 22.
Their bodies were handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu of Dawanau Police Division.
Abdullahi added that the cause of the incident was ‘local swimming in a blocked sewer’.
